Are motherly instincts innate?

Want to know the uncomfortable truth about mother instincts? Read whether today is a great or hard day for you.

Every new mother learns the peaks and valleys of this new relationship, and with each experience gains insight into what their mother’s before them have learned.

What changed?

Everything we have access to now (e.g., online resources, community groups, feminist efforts, breastfeeding advocacy, push for informed choice, etc.) was not always the reality and still isn’t for some. Support and love is still not the reality for many.

Are motherly instincts innate?

When mothers are nurtured and supported, their potential to love is greater. Simply, their self confidence is increased, they can love themselves as Mother, and this carries down to their children; their self perception is reflected in how they parent. The investment and care mothers give is relative to their situation mentality, financially, physically, emotionally. A mother can love deeply in any situation, but sometimes keys to their wellbeing are missing and we see they may not reach their full potential.

As we birth and care for our own children, and look at other mothers - maybe our own, or friends, or strangers - remember how situation and life experiences matter. Reserve your judgement, criticism, or jealousy. Bring your understanding and love instead.

Everything we have access to now (e.g., online resources, community groups, feminist efforts, breastfeeding advocacy, push for informed choice, etc.) was not always the reality and still isn’t for some. Support and love is still not the reality for many.

Today I think back about mothers who came before me; what could their situation have been like? What was birth and early motherhood like for them? What were the accepted and unquestioned norms at the time?

And I feel thankful for all they’ve done. Every effort they made, every hardship and triumph has affected my life in some way.

A mother’s love is precious - it matters that she loves herself deeply. Mamas, you’re the glue of our communities. May you feel love and appreciated today. May we continue to support one another with compassion.

Happy Mother’s Day!
